Spine surgeon Scott Kitchel, M.D. opens individual practice.

Orthopedic spine surgeon Scott Kitchel, M.D., has opened an individual practice, Orthopedic Spine Associates, with offices in Eugene and Springfield. Kitchel is the only active fellowship-trained orthopedic spine surgeon in Lane County. For the past 15 years, he has practiced with Orthopedic Healthcare Northwest.

Kitchels new practice allows him to focus on his orthopedic specialty: surgery of the spine, including all aspects of adult and pediatric spine care.

In Eugene, Kitchel is sharing office space with Oregon Neurosurgery Specialists at 1426 Oak St. The Springfield office is in the McKenzie Medical Building, adjacent to McKenzie-Willamette Hospital, at 960 N. 16th St., Suite 203. Telephone is (541) 393-0100.

Kitchel will continue to see patients at both Sacred Heart Medical Center and McKenzie-Willamette Hospital.

In addition to his medical practice, Kitchel is a clinical assistant professor in the division of orthopedic surgery at Oregon Health Sciences University and is an orthopedic consultant at the Childrens Development Research Center at the University of Oregon. He is a staff surgeon at Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children in Portland and was named to a list of Best Orthopedic Surgeons in America by the Consumers' Research Council. Kitchel has conducted extensive research on a variety of spinal fusion systems and devices, and has written and presented numerous scientific papers and publications on topics related to spinal surgery.

A native Oregonian, Kitchel attended South Eugene High School and earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Oregon. He received his medical degree cum laude at the University of Oregon Medical School in 1981, followed by a surgical internship in orthopedic surgery at Bexar County Hospital District in San Antonio, Texas. Kitchel completed his orthopedic surgical residency at the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio. In 1987 he completed fellowship training in spine surgery at the University of Miami School of Medicines Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation and Department of Neurological Surgery.
